The four letter classification of all rolling stock was recommended by all railway systems. It was initially adopted by the Victorian railways and then the NSWGR system and then on September 10th 1979 then ANR began its recoding of rolling stock. The recoding is recorded here with both a ‘previous’ and ‘current’ code link to help modellers work out where a wagon has begun its life.
It is not intended here to go into the full details of the working of the 4 code system, but for those interested, the AMRM of July/Aug 1979 issue has the details of the Victorian recoding and the NSW proposed recoding. The AMRM of March/April 1980 contains the details of the SAR/CR/ANR recoding.
